How to add subtitles to movies’ original version?

March 9th, 2010

Hello
Have you ever wondered how you could see those movies’ original version you have in your hard disk but including subtitles to help you understand them better?

Well, it will be enough as long as you look for a string like
the movie’s title followed by the string “srt” in Google.
That will take you to links containing a file with srt extension corresponding to the subtitles of the movie you are interested in.
For examply, you could type in the following string inside of Google search box:
“Something about mary srt”
You would just have to download that file, rename it with the same name as your movie’s file and place it in the same folder as your movie’s file.

That way, whenever you play your movie, you should be able to see the subtitles on the movie.

That will prompt a new window in which you will be able to disable those programs you do not want to get started with Windows.

Improve Windows Vista’s performance

March 5th, 2010

Turning off visual effects is something that really makes a difference when it comes to speed up a computer with Windows Vista.

As for me, I prefer Windows to run as quick as possible rather than it look cool. Well, that is why I suggest disabling visual effects like I said. To do this you can follow the next steps:
1. Click start button, click control panel, click system and maintanance, click performance information tools.
2. Click adjust visual effects. Provide an administrator password and confirmation in case they are required.
3. Click Adjust visual effects, click adjust for best performance, click OK.

Free photos screensaver which gets pictures recursively from subfolders

January 21st, 2010

I would like to mention that there is a screen saver called “MotionPicture Screen Saver” which in contrast to Google photos screen saver does display those pictures which are inside of your folder subfolders and so on, recursively.

Just in case you were not happy enough with this, this screensaver combines the random selection of pictures to display with the optional random selection of mp3 files from folders and recursive subfolders to play them in a random order while the pictures are displayed on the screen.

The only requirement to use this screensaver is downloading and installing this software in this order:
1st. DirectX
2nd.Motion Picture screensaver
I hope you enjoy this useful application which will let you see your pictures at your computer’s screen. At the same time, it will save you a few bucks by not having to buy one of those digital picture frames.

How to increase wireless signal strength at home.

January 19th, 2010

If you have a wireless router but its signal do not get somewhere you would like, there is a way you can increase its wireless signal’s strength. With that purpose in mind, you can get two wireless routers both of which support Wireless Distribution System (WDS). It might be a good idea if both of them were from the same vendor.

Firstly you would have to link them both by enabling them to work not only as Access point but as client bridge. Moreover, for each router you would have to type in their corresponding MAC address of the other router in the correspondign blank assigned for the client bridge functionality in the router managing application.

Secondly, you would have to choose the same wireless channel to let this WDS link work.

Thirdly, you should enable DHCP in the first router, that is to say, the router you are going to connect directly to the internet. And you make sure DHCP is disabled in the second router, that is to say, the one which is not directly connected to internet.

Then for the second router you assign a static IP address which is viewable by the first router. Nonetheless, this IP address must lay outside of the range which the first router’s DHCP server uses to assign IP addresses.

You should make sure that both routers either do not use security protocol except MAC filter. Otherwise, use just WEP because this is the security protocol that will work in this kind of link between two routers. Furthermore, in this particular case, the WEP key must be the same in both routers.

To end with, make sure that all the computers connecting to any of this two routers do no have a static IP address but a dynamic one. This one will be assigned dynamically by the first router’s DHCP server.

Essential software to move huge files or folders quickly in Windows Vista

January 15th, 2010

Hello
If you have ever had to deal with backing up a huge folder with personal pictures or music files or any other kind of data under Windows Vista, then you will know that it takes quite a while to carry out this task, depending on size, it might take quite a few hours for a few Gigabytes.

That is why using a software like TeraCopy, downloadable from code sector, is a must for anybody using digital music or pictures. And nowadays, that is to say almost everybody as you know.
This software speeds up the process of moving huge data files or folders saving much valuable time.

This software is specially interesting under Windows Vista because moving files takes too long in this operative system but you could also use it under Win XP and Win 7.

Did you ever have to work in several computers, desktop, laptop, notebook at different times of the day?

January 11th, 2010

If you ever had to work in several computers during a day, then you might find the tools, DirSyncPro and Microsoft Groove, very useful. Both of them work at least on local network.

The first one, DirSyncPro, is really easy to use. It moves files which missing in a particular location B to this location from another location A where they are not missing but present so that in the end, all files stored in A, are stored in B as well. Nonetheless, this software does not remove any file from either A or B in contrast to Microsoft Grove or Windows Live Sync which are slightly different applications.

If you have seen yourself in this situation, you will know that remembering what computer is the one in which you stored the last version of a particular work file might get tiresome. So, with this tool this trouble has ended because you will be able to have the same updated data in all the computers you want to work with.

Another use of this tool is keeping updated all the digital pictures and videos that many people like taking but not so much manage its storage. If you have several computers and you can not transfer your pictures and files always to the some computer, then you do not have to worry any more for bringing them together. The only thing you will have to do once in a blue moon is running this tool to synchronize the different computer’s folders through your local network.

A third use which is very common for the mentioned tool is synchronizing pen drive’s data with those from a computer’s hard disk. For this you will not need local network.

The second tool that I would like to cite is helpful to synchronize files which are in different computers when both of them can go online some time. This one is called Groove and it comes with Microsoft Office 2007. To use it you just have to do right click on the particular folder and click on the option entitled “Groove’s folder synchronization” from the dropdown menu.

Like I said, this tool also does not only allow synchronization through a local network but through a server which is in the Internet. This server is very useful because it store changes made to the files and notify those changes next time you open your Groove account from another computer. The tool also gives the chance to update those changes. The main limitation I see is that it has 2GB as maximum folder’ size when synchronizing. Therefore, this tool usually will be valid for folders with small files like those from Office.

Nonetheless, if what you really want is synchronizing folders with pictures and videos that you store in different computers now and then, then this last tool will not be useful because 2GB is not enought for this kind of use. In this case I would suggest using just DirSyncPro as I commented in this same post.

Besides the previous two tools described above, I want to talk to you about Windows Live Sync. It seems it might work better than Microsoft Groove for home users because it is a lighter aplication and does not consume so many computational resources. And in the end, this last application (Windows Live Sync) behaves pretty well.

To end with I want to warn you about a posible danger that might arise after using any of this applications to keep an updated copy of all your data in all your machines at the same time. The danger comes when you erase by accident data in any of your computers. You will have to be quick by disconnecting from the Internet the other synchronized computers. Otherwise you might lose your data from all of them. That is why I suggest that if you make use of this kind of applications, it is strongly recommended that you program backups may be every week or even every day depending on your needs with any specifical tool from those available, whether open source or not, for this purpose.
